“I’m only kidding mate. Well I’m not your mate and I’m only Kindling!!”
I’m John Johnston, a 7th Dan in Traditional Shotokan Karate. I’ve been teaching and training for OVER 43 years, I had a very large afro for many of those years! I teach predominantly Shotokan Karate but I like to refer to it as Adaptive Karate as I feel the name more appropriately reflects my teaching methods and allows for a more individual expression from those who practise. Many of my ideas and techniques have changed and developed over these past 43 years, but some things remain the same, like my dedication to keep our art strong, practical and full of purpose. I welcome you to our website and hope to see you in the dojo soon.

“John was and still remains probably the greatest influence to my development in martial arts, taking me through all those vital fundamental lessons, offering me (free) private lessons when he saw my potential; he even brought my suit and belt for me when I didn’t have enough money. He is a great influence and great friend and a powerful presence in British martial arts. Without John I would not in any way be doing what I am doing today and I am very grateful to him for that, and I highly recommend him and his instruction to anyone looking to fast track their martial arts”.

I cannot recommend Sensei John Johnston highly enough, either for seminars, private 121s or his classes. He is in my opinion one of a handful of karate-ka in Europe that can make practical karate easy to digest, whilst still adhering to the classical tenets of the real essence of karate. Sensei Johnston also has a pragmatic view towards an evolution of the art for each student personally. This aspect of his teaching is what separates him from many of his contemporaries in my opinion. Add into the fact he was at a high level when most of us were starting out, and is still searching for more layers to his art makes him even more of the kind of teacher that you should seek out. At the risk of having to face his ire by alluding to his age, John is one of the original “Old School” who is still as relevant and potent art wise. Finally, he is one of only 5 men who inspired me as a youth starting out in martial arts and carries on inspiring me. Not just as a martial artist, but as a man. Seek him out, in an age where teachers with substance are rare to find… if your still reading this, you’ve found one in Sensei Johnston
